Wow...what a day! Glad you survived it...and glad I didn't have to
have one. The leak test is scaring me enough...and turning my ol'
stomach too! I have been in touch with a few people local who have
used my surgeon to get the facts before hand. So I am informed and
still waiting for any information suddenly remember.
Something you said about the gurney being small for our weight hit
home cause I was approached once about that same thing a few years
ago when I was at my highest...300! It was also for stitches in my
foot after stepping on a huge piece of glass. Oh what a nightmare!
I was asked how I was prepared to get around since I'd more than
likely break the crutches. Wheelchairs weren't big enough to
accomodate me etc...! Luckly I was off the week, used our office
chair at home to roll around on and slept in a recliner since my bed
was a waterbed and hard to get in and out normally...LOL! Glad
those day's are behind me...almost for good! Thanks for letting me
ramble...LOL!!!

Cortney,
Those bars sound really good, especially with all the protein but what about
calories? I know some of the bars have just way too many calories for the size
of them. How many calories are in the bars you've got?
Thanks!

I just read the e-mail about the pain in the sternum area when you
eat or drink AND all of the responses. I am having similar issues,
sometimes, but then other times it is okay. I have two things, a
question and then a new protein packed discovery. First, question.
When does your appetite return after a three week hiatus? I am
literally force feeding myself. This a.m. I had two bites of
scrambled eggs and it was as if I could not possibly eat anymore so
I didn't. I need protein, but I am hating yogurt after the
whole "soft foods" tour in the beginning. Today I discovered some
new snack bars called "Q-Smart" (by Quaker Oatmeal) in the grocery
store. The come in peanut butter and chocolate or cranberry nut
(?). At any rate, you would assume loaded with sugar? NO! Only 1
gram and a whopping 11 grams of protein per one one ounce bar! I am
eating one right now (Peanut butter chocolate) and they taste okay,
not great, but worth the 11 packed protein grams for a snack with
low sugar to boot. Check them out!

Another newbie

2008-01-30 23:09:50

Hi,
I'm new to this group and I thought I'd introduce myself. I had the
surgery done 1/26/04, so today's my seven month anniversary. I
started at 321, I'm at 231 right now, and am aiming to lose around 2-
3 pounds per week and get to around 20% body fat. I had to get the
surgery done for two reasons: 1) because I have a bad hip which
prevented me from exercising beforehand, and I need to get a hip
replacement (I'm young, 29) but they wanted me down to a lower weight
to do this, and 2) because my insulin problems prevented me from
losing weight normally. I'm about 40 pounds within goal weight for
my surgery.
Now that I'm at a lower weight, exercising is much easier. I'm also
taking Celebrex to help me with the pain. Since the surgery I've
also been seriously body building, so that the muscle tissue can
increase my metabolism and weight loss rate. I do have a fair bit of
muscle mass, though, which is keeping my weight up. I'm thinking
that when I get down to my target body fat percentage, I'll start
competing in the natural body building world.
I'm a biochemist, so I know a lot about metabolism, diet and kcal
intake, so hopefully I can help out a lot in this forum!

Today

2008-01-29 16:54:41

i had my upperGI i was instructed to not eat or drink anything after
12 midnight i was happy to oblige naturally. Seeing this has set me
on my path to being a pre-op like some of you.I was so excited once
i finally found the right spot where i was suppose to be in. Amazing
how so many people can work in one hospital and still not know where
one office is(laughing). I pre-registered by phone like a good big
little girl and that put me in line first(smiles). So they take me
to another room you know the hurry and wait game fornately i was not
sitting there long. Til a lady came in and called my name i was like
wow that was fast. She was like i have some questions for you i was
like ok n/p she was like i didn't wanna embarrasse you but how much
do you weigh ma'am mind you she was small and this really has no
barring on the conversation at all but i thru it in there anyways.
(giggling)I said well i am 300lbs she said ok because we have a
weight requirement for this tables here i am sorry i was like don't
be sorry which it isn't her fault really. She was like sit here i
will be right back and all these things came into my mind like you
know this is the story of my life just another blow to the belly for
being a big person.Well she came back to me and she said ma'am we
are going to do this in the ER for you because this is what we do
with some of the patients that have this procedure done i was like
thank gawd because i really don't want to stall my process. She said
ma'am it will all be taken care of you will be fine and it will all
work out. I decided i may 1 day wright a book about the life of a
morbid obese womens life. But the kicker is here i haven't been
morbid obese my entire life only after child birthing did i become a
big women and trying to diet many times i became a yo-yo dieter .
However i do think it was inevitable for me not to become overweight
as my entire family is over weight since they became adults. As a
young child i was skinny and a teenager and up until i was 21.But
today made me realize alot of things that i am ever so glad i made
this decision because i am so tired of going through things like
this in my life having to have special accmodations because of being
a morbit obese person but i am still a person big or small and a
good person and a kind loving and giving and that will never change
no matter what.
In care always,
Denise in NJ.

talking about adult topics such as how losing weight has affected our

some people didn't appreciate the topics of conversation. So I
created my own group for Adult topics in the gastric bypass community.
The group deals with sexual and relationship issues that arise during
the gastric bypass process. This group is available for people who
have had the surgery as well as those considering it. Those who have
had or are considering other forms of weight loss surgery as welcome

Diane, I'm so sorry to hear you have been through so much. I can't even
imagine what the cause could be. Best of luck and glad you got yourself

the cause was. I haven't known anyone who's gone through this sort of

Question for the ladies!!! I had surgery!!!!!!

2008-01-23 09:46:02

Well ladies I ended up checking myself into the ER since by 8am I knew this was
not normal bleeding and few hrs later found out I had a tear at my vagina. ANd
of course they asked if I had inter course and if we used any foreign objects I
was like OMG no it was about as normal as it could have been and just so
happenes I did have like 2 days earlier had inter course. But I just do not see
how it was from that and I worked 2 full days feeling fine and no warning signs.
I just woke up soaked in blood and kept passing blood clots. I had to stay in
hospital all day got home at 8pm nothing to eat or drink all day. I lost alot of
blood and still feel weak dr said I could go back to work when ever I decided to
take the week off and rest I lost like over 1 1/2 pints of blood. I just read
where diet & stress can be the cause and I have to wonder if thats not the
cause. I also read where a vitamin C deficeny could be to blame. Has anyone else
been through this?????????? Sorry so long I was
just not expecting to have any more surgeries and wham this one was a shocker

Re: [Gastric_Bypass_Family] ????  about exercising...

2008-01-22 20:09:58

i know when i was 2 months post-op i was still very worn out. the things i
would always do, would tire me out very quickly. i think you are pushing a
little too hard. maybe you should try 3 days a week to start out. your body
has gone through a lot in the past 2 months. you can't expect it to be normal
and do what you want it to when you want it to. i know you are excited about
working out and your weight loss and you want to do whatever you can, but don't
overdo it. cut back to maybe 3 days a week and if that's not good enough try 2
days for a little while. you could always alternate too, 3 days at curves and
2-3 days at the track. it's basically trial and error until you feel okay. i
started out 2 days a week and worked up to at least 5 now, sometimes 6 days a
week. i weight train with my husband and jog 2 miles on the treadmill every day
now. but i'm still a little tuckered out at the end of the week, between the
exercising, work, daily life, etc.
let us know how it's going.

I made the mistake of welcoming him back when I read his V8 cocktail

Honestly I think he's worse than I remember. Seems to have come back

was still new back then and may not have seen his ravage against the

The spray is put out by Ces Sheveux and it is called
Biotin Formula, Hair and scalp revitalizer. It helps
to prevent the breakage of hair. I'm not sure of the
price but nothing that she sales in her shop is
usually over 15.00. Hope this helps.

My first period after the surgery was late by about three weeks,
very, very heavy - not normal for me at all. (My surgery was four
months ago) but since they've been right on schedule, lighter and
actually shorter in duration - but I think that also has to do with
the fact that I'm healthier and eater better.
Just my two cents.

Re: [Gastric_Bypass_Family] What do I do if I have to take the meds

2008-01-17 00:58:46

Judith,
You take Wellbutrin because your husband says so? Is that the best way to take
care of yourself?
I been married 30 yrs to the same man and I am DEFINITELY not the same woman he
married, nor is he the same man I married. We all change and grow together and
that is NORMAL. We don't have to take a pill for that and nothing EVER remains
the same.
Just my two cents Hon! Please do whatever you need to do for yourself and your
husband will reap the rewards of a healthy, happy wife. But don't think that
you have no choice in medicating yourself. It's a free world. We all have
choices.

Orlando Get Together (Saturday)

2008-01-16 20:43:21

Here is the info for the Orlando get together on Saturday. We will be meeting
at Ol" Boys BBQ on the corner of W Colonial (SR 50) and Edgewater Dr. If you
are taking I-4 you need to take the W. Colonial exit. We will be meeting at
2:00pm. My cell number is 321-276-0926. If you have never met me or Omar just
ask for us when you come in.
Just a reminder, we welcome any pre or post op, it doesn't matter who your
surgeon is and you are welcome to bring a guest. Just email me and let me know
if you will be attending so I can have an idea of how many people to set up
for.
We are in the process of trying to find a more permanent place to meet every
month so we can get away from going to restaurants. If anyone has any
suggestions please feel free to post them.
Look forward to seeing you on Saturday.

Re: [Gastric_Bypass_Family] Update - Teresa

2008-01-16 07:34:21

Hi Teresa,
I'm in the same boat you are. My insurance requires 6
months of monitored weight loss and a psych eval. for
approval. My PCP wants the sleep study and stress
test. My stress test is next Monday the 30th, my
sleep study is Sept. 9th. Sept. is my 4th month of
monitored weight loss. My husband and I go to a
support group meeting this saturday that is run by the
surgeon's staff and my first consultation with the
surgeon is Oct. 25th. They said I should be scheduled
for my surgery in January - 5 months away but I know
it will go quickly. Just not quickly enough. I hope
everything goes quickly for you. If everything goes
as scheduled we should both have our surgery close to
the same time.

Alana,
Great! We'll plan when it's a little closer. I marked your date on my
calendar so I wouldn't forget. I know people who have had Open and they have
done
fine also. You are going to do great! It's sometimes more about mindset than
anything. Go in with a positive attitude! That's one of my biggest
suggestions. I am doing great! I'm feeling wonderful - mentally and
physically. I'm
still me on the inside, the me that should have always been on display...not
the one that felt like she had to hide who I really am. My attitude never
matched what I looked like. I think the psychological aspect of this surgery is
almost as important as the physical. I actually think that programs/surgeons,
etc. should do a little more on the psychological end of this surgery. Any
way, sorry I got off on a tangent there. I'm very happy and I would do this 10
times over if I needed to.
Can't wait to see you soon!

Yes, Bridget. Highlights actually add depth to hair and makes it look
fuller. I just could not bear to get a short hair cut. My hair is curly and it
is
past my shoulders. It is pretty low maintenance also. If I did short hair
I'd want one of those cute, flippy, trendy do's and I just don't have the time

shorter.

Re: can lap gastric bypass change that much in a year...

2008-01-14 05:17:35

I think this surgery is still evolving, when I first went for my
seminar my doctor said you COULD lose 10 pounds before surgery and
eat anything you wanted until 12 am day of surgery. Ten months
later it was 2 weeks on a semi liquid diet, liquid diet the day
before. It seems surgery is easier for both you and the surgeon if
you do the liquid diet before the surgery and it also shows your
committment. I also did not have any drains and just little pieces
of tape over my incision (8 of them) when I went home.

Isopure protein...

2008-01-13 22:04:48

I have just come from the Vitamin Shoppe and bought some premixed Isopure
protein drink. The bottle has 20oz and 40g of protein and only 160 calories. I
am surprised how good it is. The type I am drinking right now is the Icy
Orange. It is a little thicker than say Crystal lite, but good none the less.
It almost tastes like a orange sicle popsicle. For those of you who can't
tolerate the thick chocolate and vanilla ones at least give it a try. To me
this is way better than the others I have tried. Not bad at all.

No question is a stupid question and in fact the more you ask and
even if that question has been asked before and answered before over
and over it is still a good idea to ask your question. I am not an
answer man. I researched my surgery for 3 years before getting it
done and am a physician myself on the enquiry board for this surgery
in D.C. and I was here before. Rude? I didn't know this was a Dear
Abby forum. I am not here to kill ANYBODY with kindness but will
offer the truth to anybody who wants to listen. I had over 100
members ask me to come back to this list and I have. If anybody
needs qualification they should go to the National Medical Archives
and New England Journal of Medicine and research the history of
actual bypass surgery OF WHICH LAP BAND IS NOT! Laproscopic banding
of the stomach compared to RNY or the like is like comparing a
manicure to having an limb re-attached. Last time I left because of
childish attitudes and name calling. I've been hardened since then
because of the growing number of people dying from the silliness
they engage in after they have this type of surgery and the poor pre
and post op care by so called physicians. I am straight forward and
if that seems rude then perhaps you've led a too sheltered life. I
love you all, kisses n hugz, me <SEE :)

great facility. They have a great bariatric center. Here is a link to their

Kathy,
It is so great to hear that Rich is doing so well. He is so lucky to have
you by his side. His surgeon and mine seem to have similar programs. I had
received three very imformative booklets prior to surgery along with attending
an
education seminiar, nutrionists seminar, pre-op testing that involved all day
with different classes. I also received the spirometer to use weeks prior to
surgery.
We have monthly support group meetings at the hospital and we have just
recently started one closer to where I live since a lot of us are more than an
hour
from the hospital in Cleveland. I believe the after care is just as
important and the pre-care.
Wishing Rich continued good health and you too Kathy. You both take care and
God bless!

Maryanne,
I did have 6 little kazoo type as I call them drains that were removed before
I left the hospital. I am referring to a tube that you go home with. I have
known several that have what they called a G-tube for about 3 weeks post-op.
This tube I did not have and when I originally was going to have the surgery
by another surgeon he was going to do this and I was very very uncomfortable
about this. He actually had 3 different tubes in and sent you home that way.
That was too scary for me to think about. The surgeon I ended up with thank
God doesn't do his surgeries this way.

doing
these surgeries since the late 70's with a death rate of .005 (I think that's

low. I felt very comfortable with them and would recommend them highly to
anyone living in this area. But this is all my personal opinion.

I have not been in this group long, perhaps not long enought to have heard from
you before. I was actually taken by your words. You are informative but your
approach is somewhat rude if you ask me. There are ways of getting information
across without having to come out rude!!! Have you had this surgery before?
Are you in the same boat as the rest of us? I thought this group was a place to
get information, share information and ask questions to help educate us all by
others experiences? I thought no question was a stupid question?
Please tell me I took this email message wrong! If I did I'm sorry and if I
didn't shame on you.
fliphaven <monkraven@...
Let me give you all some cold hard facts:
Out of 1000 Dr's that may perform this surgery EIGHTY are actually
qualified.
Out of that 80 only 20% do the proper presurgical and post surgical
procedures ie Psych evaluations, dieticians, 2 year follow up with
all of the above etc.
That means that according to the New England Journal of Medicine
only SIXTEEN surgeons out of ONE THOUSAND are actually a safe bet to
work with for any type of GPS...and don't even get me started about
those of you who would be willing to go to some third world country
for something this serious, SHEESH!
Just because the TRUTH about this surgery and the PROPER precare and
post care may not agree with who you used or what you eat or how you
act does not make it any less TRUTH!
This type of surgery has been performed since the early 60's on an
experimental basis and then regularly as of the early 70's and there
is PLENTY of evidence to support all of what is and what is NOT
healthy habits post surgery. Any questions? Too bad, I don't give
answers, only facts!
If ANY of you have any problems post op whether you hear it is
common or not CALL YOUR DOCTOR and don't waste time. A good surgeon
will be happy you called and happy to take a moment to calm your
worries or advise you medically.
and of those of you who are wondering and the hundreds who have
written me asking me to come back here, the answer is YES, it is
me...or rather, I. Sorry for the grammar.

During the first 6 to 8 weeks you will be feeling all kinds of pains
but unless there are multiple symptoms it is simply a part of the
healing/shrinking process. :)

Re: can lap gastric bypass change that much in a year and a half?

2008-01-03 06:30:41

I had Open RNY 8/3/04 and including the day of surgery I was in the
hospital 4 days and left with a NCJJ tube or I guess you can call it a
drain, but it is to supplement your water intake.
From reading this list and wandering around the internet I think there
are as many ways to do this procedure and after care as there are
doctors doing it.
My surgeon is one the first to do this kind of surgery and he sends
you home with an NCJJ, and his diet is totally different from the
diets I see people here being given by their doctors. He is protein
driven and you don't get vegies until after your six week check up and
even then you have to fit the protein and vegies into a 1 ounce cup.
So go to the surgeon you feel best with and follow their directions.

Julia,
That's how I've been trying to look at it too. I've been taking Biotin
faithfully everyday. The last time I had seen my hairdresser was in the
beginning
of July and I'm do to see her again. I will be checking with her to see if I
can continue to color my hair, I'm hoping so, I'm just way too young for gray
hair...lol. If I can't oh well, will just have to wait it out.
Thanks for the words of encouragement. Have a great day!!

ADVICE/FEEDBACK PLEASE - Hair Loss

2008-01-02 00:31:28

Laurette,
I have noticed hair loss a bit in the last 6 weeks too. But if that is the
worst side effect that I encounter than that is okay with me. I am using Nioxin
shampoo and it seems to help give my hair more fullness. I have very thin hair
to begin with, but it is very curly, so that helps too. It will grow back, I
figured, hey, it's just hair. At least I'm 90 pounds lighter now.

Re: [Gastric_Bypass_Family] DEPRESSED

2008-01-01 21:20:42

Hey I was like you when I was schedule to have surgery everytime my psyc eval
stopped it this last time I began doubting myself, thinking like you maybe by me
always being reschedule for my psyc eval is trying to tell me something, but I
had my psyc on Aug 2nd and surgery on Aug 5th now as you I am depressed but I
depressed with myself knowing that I need protein and just can't bring myself to
drink the protien shakes nor the stuff I ordered, I try to eat something with
protein but I have no appitite so I am wondering maybe thats why I was always
rescheduling because I wasn't ready for it yet, but now that I have had it I
feel good, but the protein thing is bring me down. Simply why someone may ask,
well my doctor told me after the fact like going home he said my protein is
essential to getting well, keeping my hair from falling out, and other things.
So I say hang in there and your time will come don't do like me please be
patient.

would like to crawl in a hole and never come out. I am tired of waiting,
waiting and life is passing me by. I don't do certain thing because of my weight
and I keep thinking some day. I quess that day will never come.
Oh well life goes on ( and still passes by) Thanks for letting me vent and now
its time to go cry some more. There has to be a lesson in this. I am just not
