Hi! I am new here....

2008-08-31 16:44:57

Just has Lap RNY last week Wednesday and I am having a horrible
time. It is not that I am in pain but I am SOOOOO hungry. I am on
the protein shake diet and am going crazy. I really would like
something more substantial to eat. I just feel like I made a
mistake... I know in my mind that I didn't but I am an emotional mess
(which I know can happen) and need some encouragement.
Good luck to all,
Kelly

Dora,
Congratulations on your surgery. I am so happy for you that things went so
well and they could do a LAP.
Water is great, crystal lite etc but remember stop drinking 1/2 hour before you
eat and an hours after no liquids of any kind.
I am almost 8 weeks out and just now getting my strength back. Finally beginning
to feel like my old self....YEA
I have lost 49 lbs since 8-2-04 and it is such a joy putting on jeans I havent
worn in 6 years...I was jumpig up and down in my closet all by myself as
everyone was asleep and I coulnt share with anyone but myself and God...
Again, glad you did so good girl....

Hi Everyone,
I just received a call from the hospital that my surgery will be at 9:00 a.m.
Monday! I have to be at the hospital at 7:00 a.m.. I am so glad that it is
early (unless there is an emergency surgery before me) I think I would work
myself into a frenzy if I had to wait till the afternoon.
I am doing fine... getting a little more excited than nervous, but that is
changing from hour to hour. I will be giving my husband instructions to update
you all.... but he will also be in charge of our two 3 year olds so I am not
sure if an update will actually take place or not!
I will post as soon as I feel up to it, I probably won't get home till
Friday.... praying everything goes o.k..

I ahve to agree with you there luckily my Doctor doesnt use the staples he uses
internal disolving stitchs but can wait for m y tuesday apt to get the egg test
and may get off liquids. i tried some grits this am and thought iw oudl die..
dont think i will ber trying that agian! I agree there are many that will use
anythign devised for good in a bad way and those of us who have done the
research adn done our dues should take it is stride...each day a new chance to

So far it feels pretty sore to be a loser, but I know that will
pass. I can't wait until my 2 week check-up to get my staples out
and find out how much I have lost. That is going to be so exciting.
As afraid as I am to get the staples out I think it will be
overshadowed by the excitement of the scale.

Diane,
I am so sorry to hear about your sister. It is true that this
surgery is very taxing on a person. I agree that the pshyc ela is
very important. But the bottom line is that everyone needs to
research completely to know what they are walking into. I know that
I might have depression and I will have to deal with that. I know
that I will have to be on a multi-vitamin and calcium for the rest of
my life and i too tend to be anemic and may have to be on iron the
rest of my life too. But most of us have done extensive research and
others are here to do just that. We must all make our own decisions
as to wether this is right for us or not. And we need to be fully
aware of the bad side. I just had my surgery on Monday, but I knew
full well that when I went into that surgery room it might be the
last time I was to see my husband and my mother. But you know what,
that is the chance I was willing to take. I have great faith in my
surgeon, great faith in the hospital, great faith in myself and most
importantly greatest faith in God.
I agree with a lot of what you said, and I know that you are
hurthing, but this is a decision that everyone has to make on their
own. And I know that some people worry about scars. I think that
they say that, but if you really talked with them at the bottom of it
all they are just trying to get healthy like the rest of us and the
scars are not that important.
I hope I have not offended you because I in no way would ever want to
do that. But hang in there. Live you life with all that you have
and do it in honor of your sister whose life was cut too short. We
are here for you!!!

Re: Pre-OP suggestions

Presh,
Don't be worried. If you feel like they might be leaving something
out call them. That is what I did. I kept reading where some had to
diet, and some went on liquid diets and I had been told nothing
either. So I called and they told me no, just eat light the day
before like sandwhiches and salads and the like to make it easier on
me. And when they went in to do the surgery they not only did the
surgery they did it completely laproscopic instead of the hand
assisted lap which would have required a 4-5" incision vertically in
the middle of my stomach. So don't worry. But call them if it will
make you feel better. Good luck.

Re: today; response to denise

2008-08-30 08:01:35

I agree a scar or two or flabby arms, or my favorite quote "Thighs
that look like curtains in a movie theater" are a very small price to
pay for good health. And I don't concern myself with them, but I
think when most people say they do this to look good - they really
mean to look average in clothes.
Once you begin to age regardless of your weight gravity will take you
and thrash you and everything will droop. How much depends on what
you had for gravity to grab in the first place how much droops.
If person feels a scar is too much to pay to look average then that
is their choice, but in my humble opinion it is a reason they feel
that will allow them to avoid the surgery that folks will understand
but not the real reason. The real reason in my opinion could very
likely be they are very frightened of surgery, they just plan don't
want the surgery and this reason works as well as others. Maybe they
don't have health issues with their weight, they like themselves just
fine and are getting pressure from other folks to have the surgery
to 'fix' what the others feel is wrong with the overweight person.
Give them credit for at least checking it out.

i have just recentley logged on to this link. i have mainly been just
reading through and seeing how all of you guys react with your weight loss.
i had mine done 4 years ago at st. vincents in cleveland and they did not
make you go through all the things all of you have gone through or are going
through. i hear some of you complain of the psych eval., i feel it is a
very good idea for anyone who goes through a life altering thing like this.
i wish they would of had me do that when i had my done. my sister had hers
done a year before me. she lost weight, left her husband and her kids,
married a young man, suffered from depression very bad, was an alcholic
after the surgery due to depression. she also suffered from anemia, as i
do. i cannot absorb iron like normal people can which makes me very ill and
i will have to be on a high dose of iron for the rest of my life. back to
my sister, take the psych. eval. very seriously. on march 20th of this
year my sister drove into a lake and killed herself. she was never a
depressed person until this surgery. i am a firm believer that this surgery
does mess with your hormones. be careful!!!!! another thing that i see
is a main concern for some of you..... the scars. who in the world cares
about a scar? after weighing in at 355, and now i weigh 150 i could care
less about a scar. which would you all rather have.... a scar or weigh
what you use to weigh. lets face it with all the loose skin you all are
going to have you will not be wearing bikinis on the beach. alot of
insurance companies will not pay for tummy tucks because it is cosmetic
surgery. deal with the scars and thank the good lord up above that there
is a surgery out there that is able to save your lives. its not what you
look like on the outside, its what you have on the inside that counts. my
husband did not want me to have the surgery because of how my sister
reacted. i did the surgery for me, not for him. i told him i would not
leave him because i was skinny, i would leave because hes an asshole first.
so if any of you are having the surgery or had the surgery to please
someone other than yourselves, you have had it for all the wrong reasons.
thank you and you all have a wonderful day. good luck to you all.

Pre-OP suggestions

2008-08-29 13:40:20

Hi All,
First of all, congrats to Dora and all others recently Post-Op.
Okay, I have an important question so listen up.....
My date is next friday (10/1) and my doctor has not told me to do
anything besides my pre-op testing. I already quit smoking
(hooray!!) but I see a lot of other people saying that their doctors
told them to los weight right before surgery because it makes it
easier. Should I do this anyway even though she didn't tell me to?
Help, I am a little worried I will get on the table and be told they
have to do an open one.

Re: [Gastric_Bypass_Family] Pre-OP suggestions

2008-08-29 12:29:12

Hi Presh,
Just wanted to say hi and all will be well. Every doctor is different and
depending on what our starting weight is i think determines a lot about what
they have us do. I didn't have to loose before surgery, I only signed a
contract
that I would not gain prior to my surgery. I did however, on my own try to
stay on a high protein low carb diet to get myself into the swing of things the
best I could. Trying to get myself not only physically ready but also
mentally ready. In doing that high protein diet I did loose 19 lbs which made
me
very happy....lol. I wish you all the best of luck and I know you will do
great!!!!!

but I've come to discover that I may have chosen the wrong PCP. He
made me feel like a failure. By the time I left his office, I was
in tears. I came home, and thank God my hubby was just getting off
work, or I'm not sure I'd be writing this. I'm sorry for all this
at once,I just feel the need to vent, and maybe get some advice. I
live in Washington State, and am having trouble finding the
assistance I need. I was hoping to meet someone here who has had
WLS, and have so far had no luck. I was wondering if it was a
requirement that your PCP find the surgery necessary in order for
you to go ahead. No matter what, I'm looking for a new PCP
tomorrow, and was hoping that someone in my area would have a
suggestion. I have been to the site, and spent HOURS :) reading the
info and posts, and for the first time in 15 yrs. I feel there's
hope.
Thanks for letting me vent, and I look forward to getting to now you
all!! Cindy

Ella, I had surgery August 11 and I am suppose to be able to eat TV
dinners, meatballs, meat loaf soft things. Whenever I eat something
other than tuna, yogurt, scrambled eggs I vomit and vomit until
everything comes up. I eat slowly, take my time and still the same
reaction. And forget about fresh bread, the dietian said "When you
where in second grade what did you use to make paste....flour and
water- right", I said yes and she said thats what happens in your
pouch. She said I can have stale bread or toast. But she also said
that in time I will be able to eat fresh bread when the pouch heals.

nauseaus. Anyone with ideas that can help - I will gladly welcome

that and you'll keep properly hydrated which will help the weight

I got to come home this morning at 9:00. It is so good to be home.
I don't have a whole lot of strength right now, but wanted to get
online and let you guys know that I am ok. They ended up doing my
surgery completely laproscopic instead of the hand assisted lap like
I thought they were going to do. That is great. Just 6 little holes
and a few staples.
I have luckily not had any complications yet and am tolerating water
and juice right now. I am about to go and have my first beef broth
lunch. I 'll let you know how that goes. I might venture out there
for a sf popsicle later.
To those of you coming up, I hope you have as good a surgery as I
have. I can deal with a little pain, and the liquid loratab helps
that out alot.
I am going to go lay back down for a little while. Don't want to

Re: Anybody around Nashville, TN???

Dixie,
I have been to support group meetings and a seminar; I've had the
psychological evaluation and the sleep study. My insurance requires
that I go through a 3-6 month "physician assisted nutrition program"
first. I'm about 6 weeks or so into that. I've got to go for a 2nd
sleep study Oct 7th so they can regulate the CPAP on me. Then, the
very next day, I've got to have a breathing test because my body
isn't taking in enough oxygen, or something. WHEW!! I didn't
realize all the stuff you go through. But, I'm still excited!!
I've been a member of Curves for Women for over a year now, but I
got away from it for about 4 or 5 months. I've gotten back over the
past 2 weeks. My nutritionist is making it a goal for me to go AT
LEAST 3 times a week, which is what Curves recommends in order to
see results. But, I enjoy it!!

In reality the anticipation and the night before was the worst for
me. I had very little pain considering I was feeling fine before the
surgery. I have had other abdominal surgery where I was in pain
before the surgery, lost less pieces and felt worse after the surgery
and for a longer period of time.
The hospital I went to wants you to do major disinfecting before you
come in for the surgery. You go home with a bottle of betadine soap,
shower with it rinse it off, then cover everything again including
your hair and rinse off only your hair very slightly and let the goo
dry all over you. Then in the morning when you go into the hospital
you take another shower and wash the iodine off. Must have worked I
had absoluting no infection issues, but the night before I realized
what a lint roller feels like. I stuck to everything I touched :-)
You will be fine, while you hear scary statistics no one points out
that almost everyone does fine with no major complications.

Presh,
Its a long hard journey for all of us and I just had my surgery 9/7
so I am still learning so much. Everyone here has something to say
about everything and its alway a blessing to hear what it is! Plus
the praise is outstanding, the friendship is warm and inviting!
Luckly for me I haven't had the "wipe" problem before but...not to
say after surgery I had my dh go and buy me baby wipes for extra
cleanliness...LOL!!! One reason...the acid/color after peeing is
horrible and will scare ya some...no one told me but since we are on
that potty subject I'll be the first!!!;-) I heard tongs help with
the wiping for those who need that extra inch or so..LOL!!! From a
reliable source too!! Oh well and that potty note...I am outta here!

In the beginning I was using Designer Whey Protein powder, hated it....lol.
Now I drink and can tolerate pretty good the Slim Fast Low Carb Chocolate

drink
so it's not soo bad...lol.

Thank you all for you responses thus far and thanks for clearing up
that numbers thing, it makes so much sense now. I am glad I found
you guys because as the date gets closer I am getting more nervous
and I keep seeing more television talk shows and little extras on the
news that don't seem encouraging. I mean, I only get to see the
commercial and not the show because I work but today I set my VCR to
see what that guy on CBS is talking about. It is so easy for smaller
people to be critical when they have never endured the pain I and
most of you have just walking up the driveway to the mailbox or
trying to wip after going to the bathroom (you are supposed to laugh
here even though it is a little too much info).
I hope I can contribute to others the way you guys seem to and have
already given to me.
I will keep you posted, defintely

Linda,
With the shakes it helped me, not sure it will you though, but I would add
more milk to mine or ice to water them down. Since it would take me nearly an
hour to drink one the ice really helped keep it cold too. Hope it helps.

I use the Vitamin Shoppe brand whey protein, vanilla powder. I mix it with
about 6-8 oz. of Carb Counters Non Fat milk and 5-6 ice cubes. Sometimes I add
a peach or something for a fruity taste. It goes down pretty easy.

finally got in to see the surgeon after my Friday appt was
reschedule due to Ivan's visit. I am down officially -17 pounds
since surgery and -23 since my first visit to see him. I am excited
because bone's I haven't seen a good bit are popping out of no
where. And the other night at the movies my tailbone was aching
really bad. Don joked my padding is either dropping or disappearing
from the buttock...I like the disappearing vs. dropping...LOL!!

I agree taking it off slowly is much wiser than having it drop off
and the skin having a terrible time catching up. My husband bought
me those European Wraps I believe there are 5 treatments in the

the skin to tone it up some. Hope your doing well today.

Well, my big day is almost here. My gastric bypass is scheduled for Thursday
morning about 8:00am. I spent all day today washing clothes, cleaning,
cleaning, packing, did I mention cleaning? I'm somewhat nervous but that's to be

Guess what! It is Tuesday and I am home from the hospital. I went into surgery
yesterday at 3 and came home less than 24 hours later. Everything went well;
got the laparscopic. I have 6 cotton bandages on my tummy. Middle back area
and tummy are sore, but manageable with the liquid pain medicine. Will start
"Phase 2" diet tomorrow (from clear liquids to cream soups, unsweetened
applesauce, yogurt and cream of wheat/rice). Have had no problem today with
clear liquids, have had no nausea, just some gas pains, but I walked every few
hours in the hospital. My doc is fantastic--great surgeon and very caring
individual, too (Dr. Baggs, Kaiser Richmond, CA).
Those of you who also had surgery today.......how'd it go? Remember to sip your
liquids slowly at first and walk, walk, walk. Also, the breathing and coughing
is very important.

GUESS WHAT!!! I just looked at my paperwork for surgery and Im
laughing They somehow put on my paperwork the weight my last go
round (remember I have done all the auth stuff 4 times now) and so
they have my starting weight as 460 said i needed to lose 20-40
pounds when i weighed when i started this one 417 so Im thinking
maybe That measn they dont know about the 417 and would mean I have
lost all the weight!!!!!! Cross your fingers :D Started my protien
train today and was wondering if (for those of you that know my
recipe for protien drink) If that is still considered the protien
train since it has the banana in it :( I hope so LOL. Go in for lab
work tomorrow have to fast for 14 hours god grant me the strength
LOL
and next tuesday is D day on finding out if I get to do it :D cross
your fingers that she give me a date guys.

Hi Faye,
I am going to jump in and and tell you I had my lap surgery on 9/7
and was told not to expect quick weightloss at first unless you are
holding lots of fluid. Just curious, are you still on a full liquid
diet or now on to soft foods? I go today for my followup and will
find out more about how we are suppose to be doing. Something I
have been told over and over is not to compare yourself with others
as each one of us is different. I've actually lost 12 pounds and it
goes up and down a few pounds from day to day...now that's
frustrating too. I know the more protein we consume the better for
our new systems. Keep in touch with us and let us know how you are
progressing.

Protein Post Re-visited per request

2008-08-10 22:32:06

Here it is:
Any interested in the Protein Train,
This is from another WLS message board....they say this works...
This is what it is...first thing to remember is we all do it a bit
different but for the same reasons... number one is to defeat the
carb monster...aka carb cravings, ... number two is to jump start
stalled out weight loss...also there is some thought that is the
pouch is stretched it will shrink... i dunno if its true or not.
protien diets will cause you to go into ketosis (remember the
optifast diet) you loose fast but its not a really good idea to do
long term, hence 3 days is pretty common as a goal... now this is
what I do
i drink my morning coffee... yes i am a caffiene addict....
then the rest of the day i do nothing but protien shakes water
crystal light or some sugar free flavored water... the first day is
hard but the second day and third day are pretty easy to me... then
on the 4th day i start adding things like a scrambled egg with
cheese still protien but food along with my shakes... then as time
goes on i get back to a semi normal diet i never totally stop my
shakes as i totally believe in them even though my dr does not... i
will keep a daiily post of what i do that day so folks can follow
and see what happens ... i have a girl friend in ohio that is
joining me on this but she never does shakes she does just food...
so i am compairing notes on how we both do...
s interested...
She had written me about it and I copied and pasted it. Hope it
helps. I know I am keeping it for future reference.
Hugs, Linda in AL.

Re: Protein train--Marge

2008-08-10 17:18:51

Basically what I found out is using 3+ Protein shakes to equal our
daily quota of 60 to 80 grams which is what our bodies need on a
daily basis. Any other protein can be just eaten but you wont have
to add it in if you are consuming the shakes which are most
important. If I can find the original with the information on it
then I'll repost it.

its so true to think when you loose that much you have lost another
person. Have to admit, reached my first plateau even just two weeks

4. It sure does work!!! Good luck!

I have 1 month and 1 week to go till 1 year out. I
have lost 163 lbs, with 37 more to go till goal. I
would like to reach my goal, but for 3 weeks I've only
lost 1 lb. I do find that I can eat more and this may
have something to do with it and like you said, I am
slacking on my exercise and don't stay as busy as I
did during the summer. I need to make sure to get
plenty of exercise and I think I will try the protein
train to get myself jumpstarted. I tried it
previously, but found it very hard to just stick to
liquids all day. I am not giving up this fight until
I reach my goal. Good luck,

IT TOOK ME A WHILE BUT I AM FINALLY HERE!!!

2008-08-05 22:52:37

IT TOOK ME A LONG TIME BUT I AM SO EXCITED TO SAY THA TI HAVE FINALLY
LOST 100LBS. I DID THE HAPPY DANCE AND PRAISED THE LORD ALL WEEKEND.
I HAD BEEN AT 99LBS FOR OVER 4 WEEKS. I KNOW THAST I WAS NOT GETTING
IN MY PROTIEN AND I HAD NOT BEEN EXERCISING FOR ABOUT A MONTH BECAUSE
OF GALLBLADDER SURGERY AND MOSTLY JUST BEING LAZY ( I'M JUST BEING
REAL WITH MYSELF, I HAD A LONG TALK WITH MYSELF AND I HAVE TO DO
BETTER). BUT ANYWAY I GOT BACK TO MY EXERCISING LAST MONDAY AND WHEN
I STEPED ON THE SCALE SATUDAY MORNING I WAS DOWN 103LBS. I DO NOT
KNOW HOW IT WORKS FOR OTHERS HERE BUT WHEN I DO NOT EXCERCISE I CAN
NOT LOSS ANYTHING. I WENT TO SAMS CLUB THIS WEEKEND AND PURCHASED THE
ATKINS SHAKES THEY HAVE 20GMS OF PROTEIN IN A 11OZ CAN.ITS THE ONLY
HIGH PROTIEN DRINK THAT I CAN TOLERATE. SO I AM TRYING TO GET UP MY
PROTEIN. I JUST WANTED TO BE AMONG THE ONES THAT SAY I HAVE LOST
100LBS. THANKS FOR LISTENING

Hi December,
I hope your day is filled with wonderful and exciting new's. Sorry
to hear you are still having thigh pain. I was talking to my Sister
this weekend and she replied that her hips have hurt her since
having back surgery...seems its a nerve that I can say but not write
it...LOL!!! I forgot to ask what they have her taking but will if
it would help you. About the pic, seems you can add them yourself
but for some stupid blonde moment for this redhead...I can't seem to
do it!! Might try it again too!

Thank you so much, Fran. You are so encouraging and uplifting to me.
I'm hoping that the surgery is not postponed since I've come down with a herpes
outbreak (small, but annoying)--happens whenever I get under a lot of stress.
Has anyone gone through this when about to have surgery?
Anyway, I've got my bag packed and my best friends are taking me to the hospital
by 1:30. Surgery should be around 3 today.
I'll let you know what happens.

8 week checkup today

2008-08-04 15:34:15

Hello everyone today is my 8 week checkup and I will let you all
know how it went. I want to say that I have said a prayer this
morning for all my fellow group members who are having surgery today
and this week. I have ask God to watch over all them and keep them
safe and let them make it through and have a happy and healthy life.
This surgery can be disappointing for some people as it has been
with me but I have a good friend who keeps me pushing and keeps me
going. Most thing that dispress me is they have not found any pain
pills or pills that can help my thighs, and also the protein thing
but I am managing. And also everytime someone who don't know I have
had the surgery say you losing weight aren't you I just look at them
and say I trying (smile). A question for anyone I would like to post
a pic of before the surgery do I have to get an ok from the
moderater to post it.
Ok family I have to be getting ready my ride will be here before I
know it.
Oh yeah I wanted to say to many of you I know I don't answer many
question but always is asking, well the reason for that I am not
very educated with the surgery so I am learning from all who comes
to the group, maybe down the line I be able to help someone like all
you nice people are helping me and I do like to say thanks to you
guys cause you all have also helped me gotten through some
depressive moments (hugs to all of you).

That is too funny Angela...I also noticed it my brief time online
yesterday too!! I can't thinking...that isn't her email
address...but to make you feel better, my husband has called me
Dorothy since moving here to Alabama because I am alway comparing to
TX and he will say "Dorothy, your not in TX anymore"! Talk about a
good laugh and a good jab to the ribs...LOL!!!

Re: Ok---Angela

Angela,
I was told recently that we need to have between 60 and 80 grams of
protein a day...I'd hate to have to drink it all in one glass...you
know what else, I love sweets but having trouble with these shakes
any brand of them too!

Another Question

2008-08-02 19:19:18

Today I went in the store here and seen that had Instant Carnation
Breakfast and it say 0 sugar and carbs, but when I look at the back
it say 7g of sugar and I think 12g of carbs, so I guess they don't
have the sugar free here. do anyone think that is good for us or
not. I may have to drive 2 hours to Little Rock, AR to get it.
Thanks

The hospital had everything I needed. When I got home sf popsicles,
sf jello where very tastee. I was in for 3 days and my butt was
sore when I finally got home. I hated the hospital bed and slept in
a recliner in my room.

you when you got home. I'm looking for advice from those of you
who've been there. Getting excited but anxous, too.

Re: Almost 4 Month Update

2008-08-01 11:39:30

Bethany,
It was nice to see you post. I am soooo happy for you. THat is such
a great accomplishment. You must be very proud of yourself. Wow, in
almost 4 months. You have to tell the group your secrets. We need to
know!! haha. I agree with you, mini goals are so important. I am
treating myself everytime I lose 10-20 pounds. Right now, it is like
every 20 pounds but once it gets harder and I am down closer to 200,
I know it will be harder so I will reward myself every 10 pounds.
This is hard work and we deserve little things. Mostly, I am getting
snowbabies but one reward is a new hairstyle, one is a set of nails
(i want fake nails again). and of course when I get to goal, hubby
is giving me a $1000 shopping spree to my fav. store Fashion Bug,
only this time I will be able to shop on the "other side." I figure
they took care of me when I was a big girl, so I will keep my
business with them as a "not-big" girl..haha. Congrats again!!

Dora,
Just wanted to let you know that you are in my thoughts and my
prayers. I will be waiting to hear from you after surgery. Keep a
positive outlook and I will pray that God will guide the surgeon's
hands and those of the others working within the hospital during
this time. Also that you have comfort and peace as you move from
one lifestyle to a new and healthy life.

Re: Ok Angela

2008-08-01 09:32:35

Angela,
I was told that we needed to have between 60-80 grams of protein a
day. According to my nutritionist and my docotr, our bodies only
absorb 30 grams at a time. So any more we take it at one time is
just wasted. Check with your doc or your nutritionist though because
we all know how much their comments vary. best wishes to you!!
